Consulate General of Japan, Bangalore

About this project

The Consulate General of Japan in Bangalore approached us to create a Japanese ceremonial space within their premises — a tatami room that would authentically represent Japanese culture in India's technology capital.

This was a commission that demanded the highest standards. For a Japanese government body to entrust this work to us was a validation of both our materials and our craft.

What we delivered

We installed hand-stitched tatami mats made from Kumamoto igusa grass throughout the ceremonial room. Each mat was custom-measured and hand-stitched by Nishiwaki Kazuhiro, a master tatami artisan. The installation meets Japanese standards for traditional tatami rooms.

Materials

  • Kumamoto igusa grass — harvested and graded in Japan
  • Hand-stitched omote by Nishiwaki Kazuhiro
  • Traditional tatami doko (base material)
  • Custom bordering to specification
